Day Two

I think that I should say something right now. These posts usually don't chronicle a single day. It just feels better than using "Part x" or "Chapter x" and I feel too lazy to add individual titles.

The events of this post happen right after Day 1.

After I had finished my shower I got dressed in my usual attire. I got three shirts and a pair of jeans for my Birthday. They're the first clothes I had got since moving into Blackstone Hills. They feel nice - if a bit baggy. I grabbed one of these shirts and some slacks. This was to be my attire for the day.

Upon stepping outside I noticed something odd. There was nobody outside. Not even Darryl, who would usually be taking his morning walk at this time. I thought "maybe he's at work." but then I realised that his car was still in the driveway. It's still in the driveway. Waiting for its owner to return.

I decided to try to call someone. I grabbed my phone and called the first number on speed dial - Mom. It immediately picked up - which is odd as Mom usually takes a good five seconds to reach the phone. All I could hear was a sort of ragged breathing sound. Then the phone hung up.

I thought "Ok, maybe Mom's phone is broken" so I tried the next person in the speed dial - my cousin Jason. The same thing happened.

This went on for a good five minutes until I started to wonder if my phone was broken. It seemed odd that both my computer and phone could suddenly fail like that. I had read something about "EMP devices" so maybe it could have been that I thought.

I decided to drive to the Spaples - the local tech store - to see if they could fix my phone. While I was driving around it began to dawn on me that there were no cars on the road. On any other day this would have been a good thing but this got my brain working on overdrive wondering what had happened.

Eventually, I found the Spaples. There was one problem - the lights were off. In fact, the lights were off in every single store in the block except for one. Pam's

Pam's is a small convenience store run by an old lady named Pam. She's more Kathy Bates old than Pam Ferris old though. I went there once before. Pam had this thousand-yard stare that creeped me out. She was also the only employee there besides who I assumed to be her son. I never got his name.

When I walked in the store looked like it had before. Some items were arranged differently and some shelves were empty that weren't before but it looked roughly the same. I didn't feel like buying anything though.

Eventually, I made my way to the front counter. What I found shocked me.

Pam was curled up under the counter. She looked scared. The thousand-yard stare had left her eyes.

"They're all gone, everyone's gone. Even Reginald". Those were the words that she was muttering to herself. Like a mantra. Her voice was nothing more than a whisper.

The sight made the tiny pit in my stomach turn into a gaping chasm. I ran out of the store as fast as I could.

While I was outside of the store I heard something rooting through Pam's garbage. Eventually, it ran away. It definitely wasn't a raccoon. It looked more like a person - but it had to be a baby or a midget.

Here's a sketch of what it looked like. Admittedly, I only saw it as it ran past me so some of the details are probably wrong but the one thing I remember was that its skin was dark red.

Whatever it was - or is, for that matter - I don't feel that safe with it running around. I'm going to get some animal traps from the local Cock's Hunting Goods. If I wasn't completely alone and fearful that some red-skinned midget could break into my house I'd find that name humorous.
